Wordpress makes a great CMS
Main / Westslope Design Blog

Wordpress was built as a blogging platform, but it has proven to be such a capable CMS tool that lots of smaller companies and individuals now use it to administer their websites.

If you're looking for an inexpensive, straightforward way to blog and add content to your website on an ongoing basis, we would definitely recommend using Wordpress. Not only does Wordpress make it easy to administer your site, it has a lot of great SEO features cooked in that increase the “findability” of your website.

Here are some of the SEO-related benefits of powering your website with Wordpress:

1. Ease of use — It may sound simple, but since Wordpress is easy to use it is going to be much more likely that you’ll actually add and update your site’s content. If you are good with Microsoft Word you have the skills required to add search-friendly content to your site.

2. Keyword-rich, search-friendly HTML — Since the presentation layer (the design!) is cleanly separated from the content layer (the text), search engines get good clues as to what content is important and what is not.

3. Keyword-rich, search-friendly URLs — Wordpress lets you make search-friendly page names that index and rank better in search engines than the complex, dynamically-generated URLs that are typical of other, more outdated content management systems.

4. RSS feeds — RSS feeds help with link-building and will grab your site some visibility in blog search engines like Google Blog Search.

5. Participation — Get your visitors to interact with your site by having them leave comments and fill out contact fields (you’ll probably receive trackbacks and pingbacks too if you are writing interesting content).

6. Extensibility — There are thousands of plugins and hundreds of sidebar widgets out there that you can use to add functionality to your site. Popular plugins include: Event Calendar, various SEO tools, Podcasting, and Forms.

7. Support Community — Wordpress also has a very robust and responsive developer and user community. Chances are, if you have a Wordpress-related issue, there’s an answer out there for it.
